Taxi road rage video a YouTube hit

CCTV footage of a Bloemfontein minibus taxi driver driving into and then cruelly assaulting a pedestrian in a road rage incident in Andries Pretorius Street has attracted international attention after going viral on the internet.

Minibus taxi driver Aggrey Mojanaga, 43, appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on a charge of assault on Monday, but the charge was provisionally withdrawn by the Free State director of public prosecutions due to a lack of evidence. The case may be reopened.

Julius Malema expelled from ANC

African National Congress (ANC) has expelled its controversial youth leader Julius Malema, who was appealing against his five-year suspension from the party.

The ANC’s disciplinary committee found him guilty of fomenting divisions and bringing the party into disrepute.

Once a close ally of President Jacob Zuma, Mr Malema is currently one of his strongest critics.

The 30-year-old now has 14 days to appeal against the decision.

A Germiston man has been awarded R200 000 in damages by the South Gauteng High Court for his wrongful arrest and detention, Beeld reported on Monday.

Ashwell du Plessis sued the police minister and the national director of public prosecutions after his arrested in 2004 in connection with an armed robbery at Imperial Cargo in Germiston.

SAA plane skids off Sao Paulo runway

A South African Airways plane carrying 153 passengers skidded and veered off the runway when it touched down in heavy rain in Sao Paulo, Brazil on  Friday.

No passengers were injured.

The Aviation Herald reported that the SAA Airbus A330-200 skidded shortly after it touched down in heavy rain at Guarulhos airport.

South Africa’s animal welfare body is investigating claims that a company planned to sell live rabbits together with loaves of bread to township consumers.

Northern Cape police in Kimberley have impounded a 1976 Toyota bakkie whose only roadworthy part was its windscreen, Beeld reported on Thursday.

Lion attack kills South Africa zoo keeper

A lioness has attacked and killed a 65-year-old South African zoo keeper at a farm owned by Johannesburg Zoo.

Joe Ramanata, who had worked for the zoo for more than 40 years, was taken to hospital but was declared dead on arrival, the zoo said.

“He was either feeding or cleaning an enclosure when he was attacked by a lioness,” zoo spokeswoman, Letta Madlala, told the AFP news agency.

Nelson Mandela to be on South African banknotes

New South African bank notes will bear the image of former president Nelson Mandela, President Jacob Zuma announced in Pretoria on Saturday.

The notes would make South Africans remember their achievements, Zuma told reporters at a function also attended by SA Reserve Bank Governor Gill Marcus and Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

Saturday marks the 22nd anniversary of Mandela’s release from prison.
